Marijuana Preferable To Joints For Pain Relief

But critics say pure THC is more psychoactive and less therapeutic than cannabis, because it lacks other compounds present in the natural alternative.

In the Columbia University study, regular marijuana smokers - who were otherwise healthy - immersed their hands in extremely cold water for as long as they could tolerate it. Marijuana and THC pills were equally effective at reducing their pain sensitivity, the study found.

But dronabinol elicited lower ratings forpositive drug effects"; such as howhigh" and stimulated the subjects felt and whether they would take it again.

However while dronabinol helped relieve pain for at least two hours longer than marijuana, its onset was also slower. The effects peaked about three hours after ingestion, compared to 15 minutes for marijuana.

Dr Cooper said this gave marijuana an advantage because it was easier to judge the necessary 'dose' and sufferers may be less inclined to use it until they really needed it.

She stressed that all the subjects in her study had been regular cannabis users. Non-users could have lower tolerance to either marijuana or THC pills, increasing the painkilling efficiency but also the side effects of either medication.

Czech pharmacies start advertising medical marijuana

Humboldt State University launches marijuana research institute

Humboldt State University in Humbolt, California, has dedicated an institute to the research of marijuana.

Humboldt may be the first to instigate an institution purely for the study of pot. And according to economist Erick Eschker, the institute's co-chair, who studies the link between marijuana production and employment in the county, it makes perfect sense.

'If anyone is going to have a marijuana institute, it really should be Humboldt State,' Eschker told the Eureka Times-Standard. 'It has the potential to be a world-class institute, and we're just getting going.'

The Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research, as it is officially called, will sponsor lectures and have 11 faculty members from fields ranging from economics to psychology and sociology coordinating their research on the drug, according to the Associated Press.

'They finally tapped into something that's a big local concern and part of the identity here,' politics professor Jason Plume, who hosts a talk on marijuana regulatory reform, told the Times-Standard.

The institute's founding is particularly timely, as voters in Colorado and Washington recently passed legislation to legalize marijuana, something that California has yet to do.

Medical marijuana patients and their supporters will unite in front of the federal building on Wednesday, June 20th at 1:30pm to protest a raid last week on Sacramento's first permitted dispensary in Sacramento. Last Monday, El Camino Wellness Center was raided by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and shut down, after having served thousands of Sacramento patients since 2008. Though no charges have been filed against the dispensary operators, the Internal Revenue Service has seized the facility's bank accounts. The raid stems from a federal crackdown by U.S. Attorneys in California that began last fall.

"The Obama administration is betraying patients and lying to the public," said Kris Hermes, spokesperson with Americans for Safe Access (ASA), one of the groups organizing Wednesday's protest. "The President and the Attorney General have said publicly that the Justice Department is not targeting state-compliant medical marijuana dispensaries, but that's exactly what it's doing." Earlier this month, Attorney General Eric Holder told members of the House Judiciary committee that, "We limit our enforcement efforts to those individuals, organizations that are acting out of conformity with state law." However, by all accounts, El Camino was acting in full conformity with local and state laws.

Since October 2011, the Justice Department has sent letters to more than 300 dispensary operators and landlords across California, threatening criminal prosecution and asset forfeiture if state-compliant businesses are not shut down. Sacramento in particular has been hard hit, despite its attempt to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries. As a result of the threats, almost all of the nearly 100 dispensaries have closed in unincorporated Sacramento County. In the City of Sacramento, only 18 dispensaries remain of the original 34 that had been permitted, and many of those left have already received threatening letters, including El Camino Wellness Center.

In December, El Camino Wellness Center sued Attorney General Holder and U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner, claiming that the Justice Department crackdown violated the rights of medical marijuana patients and was aimed at shutting down their legal supply. "Whether intentional or not, the Obama administration is pushing patients into the illicit market by forcing dispensaries to close," said ASA's Courtney Sheats. "If El Camino Wellness, a taxpaying pillar of its community, fails to pass muster with the federal government, then no one is safe."

The raid comes as several public officials have vocally opposed the Justice Department's actions, including local and state legislators, as well as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Betty Yee from the California Board of Equalization, which collects more than $100 million in sales taxes from dispensaries like El Camino Wellness. In December, California Attorney General Kamala Harris wrote to the state's four U.S. Attorneys, calling the federal government "ill-equipped to be the sole arbiter of whether an individual or group is acting within the bounds of California’s medical marijuana laws..."

More than 50 localities in California, including the City of Sacramento, have adopted ordinances regulating medical marijuana dispensaries. "Local and state governments must be allowed to develop, implement and enforce their own public health laws without interference from the federal government," said Hermes.

Medical Marijuana Legalized in Connecticut State

Connecticut on Friday grew to be the 17th U.S. state to legalize the medical use of marijuana.
The state's Governor Dannel Malloy indicated into law legislation allowing licensed physicians to endorse an adult patient's use of marijuana for medical purposes, according to a statement from the governor's office.
The new law puts in place restrictions to prevent the kind of abuse that has plagued some of the 16 other states and the District of Columbia where pot is legal for medical use.
For years, we've heard from so many patients with chronic diseases who undergo treatments like chemotherapy or radiation and are denied the palliative benefits that medical marijuana would provides Governor Malloy said.
With careful regulation and safeguards, this law will allow a doctor and a patient to decide what is in that patient's best interest, he said.
Under the bill, patients and their caregivers must register with the Department of Consumer Protection. In addition, a doctor must certify there is a medical need for marijuana to be dispensed, including such debilitating conditions as cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or epilepsy.
Finally, only a pharmacist with a special license can dispense medical marijuana, according to the new law.

Michigan issues medical marijuana cards to 44 children

Michigan has issued medical marijuana cards for 44 children, counting three who are under 10 years old.

Of the 44 minors with cards:

1. 21 are 17 years old,
2. 11 are 16 years old,
3. 5 are 15 years old,
4. 1 is 7 years old,
5. 2 are 9 years old,
6. 2 are 14 years old
7. 1 is 13 years old and
8. 1 is 11-year-old.

Medical marijuana relics banned at the federal level. Most of the 17 states that permit medical use don't control it to adults, according to Morgan Fox of the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. She said Delaware and Connecticut have adults-only rules.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has no rule on medical cannabis, although it's working on developing one, the newspaper said.

Cooper Brown, 14, has Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. His mother, Rebecca Brown, said she turned to medical marijuana after trying every recommendation medication to control her son's frequent captures.

"This isn't something we entered into lightly," said the mother, who lives in Oakland County, north of Detroit. "I've done a lot of reading and a lot of research. I have everything tested. I am not a pot smoker and never in a million years thought of trying this. But when your child is suffering and you feel desperate, you consider things you may not have before.

"To me, it's not a drug issue, it's a compassion issue," she said. Cooper does not smoke the drug, but instead consumes it in food his mother prepares.

The state won't disclose the medical conditions for which the children are authorized to use medical marijuana. They say it's not known how the children take the drug, though there are many options: in food, such as baked goods, a liquid extract called a tincture, a vaporizer or smoking.
